Bargate
Take time out from visiting the many superb shops in West Quay, Bargate, Above Bar and Marlands to discover Southampton's architecture dating back to Norman times, good example being Bargate old town gate, situated within the main shopping area.
St Michael's Church, the oldest in the city, is to be found just south of Bargate in Bugle Street. It is also Norman and contains a rare font of black limestone, sometimes called Tournai marble, though this is geologically inaccurate, imported from Tournai in Belgium. Opposite the church is 16th century Tudor House, now a museum, with its striking architecture, banqueting hall and reconstructed Tudor garden.
Join free guided walks that take you round the old town walls, starting from Tudor House Museum.
