Inner City Walks

A leisurely Winchester hiking trail suitable for all ages and disabled people takes you to all the important historical sites. Be prepared to spend some time at various locations to get the most out of your walk.

Walk along the River Itchen

We suggest three different hiking routes along the river Itchen. The Itchen is an important river that has played a significant role in the history of Winchester. It is highly recommended as it combines the city and English country for a pleasant experience. These Winchester hiking trails can be adapted to suit your requirements.

The Whiteshute Ridge Hiking Trail

The Whiteshute Ridge Hiking Trail provides excellent views of the Winchester Cathedral and St. Catherine's Hill. It is moderately difficult but relatively short. Allow 2 to 2½ hours for this walk in Winchester. If you spend some time resting or picnicking, it will take proportionally longer.

The St Catherine's Hill Hiking Trail

The St Catherine's Hill Hiking Trail is short but provides excellent views of Winchester. This trail can be done as an independent walk or as an extension to the Winchester Lower Itchen Hiking Trail. Allow 40 to 60 min for this trail to allow some time relaxing and sightseeing from St Catherine's hill.

Traditional Winchester Hiking Trails

Some long distance walks pass through Winchester. These hiking trails include the Pilgrims trail, Clarendon way, the Itchen way and the South Downs trail. You are welcome to walk part of these trails, or if you are more adventurous, you may extend these walks and spend a few days on each one as you walk the length thereof.
