Photographic Collage of Winchester

This photographic collage shows the diverse choices photographers face when visiting Winchester. The city is very picturesque and opportunities abound for visitors to create a beautiful photographic portfolio during their visit.

Winchester in Winter

Winchester experiences mild winters with frost. It seldom snows in the area due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream but when it does, some exceptional pictures are readily achievable. Opportunities exist to photograph snow scenes, frost fog and occasionally hoar frost.

Winchester in Spring

Spring Bulbs

Spring flowers abound as elsewhere in the south of England. Bulbs flower in most gardens and forests. There are loads of daffodils, narcissus, and tulips to name but a few. The abundance of flowers provide excellent opportunities to practice your macro photographic skills. Another prominent spring attraction is the masses of bluebell displays in the forests during May.

Winchester in Summer

Summer in The Square Enjoying a Break in The Square

The drier climate in summer makes it pleasant to go on walks or longer hikes. There are excellent opportunities to photograph swans and other interesting summer scenes along the river Itchen.

Winchester in Autumn

Fall at St Cross Fall at St Cross

Winchester has its fair share of autumn colours which provide a rich tapestry to photograph. A drive out to the New Forest should be on the agenda for the best fall pictures in the south of England.

Architectural Photographs

An Example of Local Architecture of the Castle Local Architecture of the Castle

Historical Winchester abounds in rich architectural diversity. Although the city tries to maintain its historical identity, modern architecture is also present and present further scope to develop a rich photographic collage.

Wildlife Photography

Natural wildlife still occurs in the woods around Winchester. I have seen deer and foxes on numerous occasions. I even encountered a fox on Whiteshute Ridge early one morning. Marwell zoological park provides alternative opportunities to create a photographic collage of wildlife, and of course there is also the New Forest.

Photographing Ancient Buildings and Ruins

Ruins of Wolversey Palace Ruins of Wolversey Palace

Here Winchester comes to its own right. There are a number of ruins and very old buildings in and around the city. The most famous being the cathedral, Wolvesey ruins, the Castle and St Cross Hospital to name some of the well known landmarks.
