Winchester Events

Winchester events are hosted throughout the year. The rich diversity of events ensures that there is something of interest to everybody, be it medieval re-enactments, cultural events, historical comemmorative events or farmers/Christmas markets. Steam Rally

Winchester Steam Rally

The annual Bill Targett memorial steam rally takes place during May each year. There is something for everyone, steam cars, trucks and fire engines. Loads of different items may be viewed and purchased in the stalls.

Apart from the Steam Engines there were many other vintage vehicles present at the Winchester Steam Rally. I also found the mechanical organ quite fascinating, something totally unusual at a rally! This 52 key Verbeeck Organ was built by J Verbeeck a Belgian firm founded in 1884.

Hat Fair

The hat fair takes place during June the High Street and the open area next to the Winchester Cathedral.  Street artists perform various acts from acrobatics and music to fire eating and knife throwing. Spectators may donate to the actors by placing their donations in the artists hats. Due to the large number of acts and the diversity thereof, many visitors attend. An carnival atmosphere contributes to a very pleasant experience.

Winchester Festival

The Winchester Festival provides an opportunity for authors to promote the publications. Various readings provide entertainment to visitors interested in books and publications.

Christmas Market

In December the Christmas market and ice skating ring provides a festival atmosphere to the city. The market is open during the evening as well. Even if you do not want to purchase a special Christmas gift. The atmosphere and lights provide for a memorable outing.

Medieval Pageant

The Hospital of St. Cross presents an afternoon of medieval entertainment during the last weekend in May. Many actors are dressed in period costume and prepare for an afternoon of family fun. The ancient architecture of the hospital provides a perfect backdrop for the fighting duels between the knights in their armour.
